They cannot leave

ed. 2026/4/10 in process Taiwan is a wealthy country that can offer a decent standard of living to many people. Unfortunately, not to everyone. Some places are deeply saddening. Among these sad places are the decaying shopping malls. Most of them were built during the first wave of rapid economic growth in Taiwan. They all share the same story: the buildings aged, new centers were constructed, the area became less attractive, and investment in the properties declined. As a result, fires broke out, accidents increased, and wealthier tenants moved away. It is usually a vicious cycle. People from more vulnerable social

A Man’s First Love – Forever

edited: 2026/03/01 Well, maybe not the first love, at least not in some countries—after all, mothers would technically come first. No jokes about Asian mothers please. But let’s not dive too deeply into Freud here. Cars and motorbikes mean a lot to us. Anyone who drives in Taiwan knows the eternal struggle of finding a parking space. Yet, I think this driver is a uniquely creative masterpiece—even by Taiwanese standards of originality. We all know it: the car or the motorcycle accompanies us throughout life. Maybe it’s where we took our first girlfriend for a ride? Maybe the motorbike helped us

God’s Own City in Taiwan

He must have stopped here for a rest – there’s no other way to explain all the churches. For me, Tainan is the most beautiful city in Taiwan. The old buildings, the narrow alleys, and even the somewhat run-down corners all contribute to its charm. Xinglin General Hospital was once a landmark for urban explorers, not least because a Netflix film (Hospital) was shot there. Today, the place is well sealed off. The windows are barred, yet some people have tried their luck, apparently even sawing through the grates. It seems God took a holiday here, less than 100 meters from

Hiroo Onoda

The tunnel complex at E’tou Mountain in Jiaoxi is also a remnant of the Pacific War. Its air defense strategy and interior layout are almost identical to those of the Neiyuan Mountain tunnel complex. However, since the entrances and exits in this area are located away from cemetery grounds, it is well suited for opening to the public. It could rightly be considered a cultural tourism treasure, but due to divided opinions among local residents, its development has been repeatedly delayed. (no one will expect a whole, partly intact system) They are rarely mentioned on the Internet, and it’s easy to

Teacher! You lost your students.

Anyone who wants to see some of the old schools and villages in the north should hurry. Soon, there will be nothing left to see. This school was already doomed by declining birth rates. Each grade level had only one class left, and at one point there were 11 teachers for just 23 students. It is a typical Taiwanese standard school, with a large sports field in the center. As a lost place it may not carry much adventure or significance—but for the students and teachers, the closure meant losing both memories and a workplace. The school is also making way

Tongxiao Railway Granary

(rice-milling facilities) The reports and photographs highlight a dilemma in Taiwan: there are still many historic buildings from earlier periods that offer valuable insights into the past. At the same time, they are often not considered “significant” enough to justify government investment. Here are some earlier photographs and survey records from government documents. (https://nchdb.boch.gov.tw/assets/overview/historicalBuilding/20100430000001?utm) The Tongxiao Railway Granary, located at No. 109 Zhongshan Road in Tongxiao Township, Miaoli County, was built by the Taiwan Provincial Grain Bureau around 1950. Constructed in response to postwar food shortages, it is a representative example of grain warehouses and rice-milling facilities established across Taiwan in

The foundation of growth and prosperity – though not necessarily for nature

Cement is the backbone of our economic growth, but at the same time, it is a major polluter when it comes to the climate. Anyone traveling from Suao to Hualien will see cement mining everywhere: the long conveyor belts and the massive silos. In general, you can walk into these areas; only the actual facilities are off-limits. At least, the employees didn’t seem to care much. Copyright Claudius Petzold

Good Golden Old Times or the GoldGoldTheater – 金金戲院

Very dangerous (risk of collapse) Memories, memories, memories – the golden age of cinema. Located in Yingge, the Jinjin was founded in 1985 with a capital of 2 million NTD and formally closed in 2007. It occupies the 3rd to 5th floors of what is now a completely abandoned high-rise building. Apart from its decayed condition, the building is an unremarkable concrete block. It is wrongly associated with a series of bomb attacks from the 1950s, which actually took place only nearby. The entrance is not too hard to find, but its condition requires a bit of courage to enter –
